10-charley-glerumCharley started at Choate, Hall & Stewart in 1976 as a paralegal in the firm’s bankruptcy group and, after taking time out to attend law school, he returned as a lawyer. Charley’s practice consisted primarily of representing senior banks and other lenders in corporate Chapter 11 cases throughout the United States. He also represented debtors, including the first hospital to file under Chapter 11 in Massachusetts, numerous Creditors Committees, and later in his career he was periodically appointed trustee or examiner by the bankruptcy court in various cases. While at Choate, Charley was head of the bankruptcy group and served on the firm’s management committee. Charley appeared for a decade in “Best Lawyers in America,” was regularly selected as a “Superlawyer,” was listed a number of times in the “first band” of Massachusetts bankruptcy lawyers by “Chambers,” and in 2007 was selected as one of “Superlawyers” 100 best lawyers in Massachusetts.

Charley retired from Choate in 2007 and for three years taught history and theology and coached basketball and track at Trinity Catholic High School in Newton. He then returned to the practice of law at Edwards Wildman in Boston until 2014 when he retired again. Last year, Charley taught an SAT prep class at the Josiah Quincy Upper School and audited classes at Harvard Divinity School. Charley’s wife Betsy Burnett is a partner at Mintz Levin, his son Ben is an associate at Sidley Austin in New York, and his daughter Katie works at Squareroots, a health care start-up also in New York.

For his fellowship project, Charley will work with the Justice Bridge Legal Center at the University of Massachusetts School of Law (Dartmouth). Justice Bridge provides resources to new attorneys to help them provide reduced-fee legal services to modest income clients. Charley will mentor new Justice Bridge attorneys and work with them on civil litigation, bankruptcy, and business issues.
